Influencing the UK Parliament

There are many voices seeking to influence environmental policy in the UK.

The IES is committed to supporting its members to engage impactfully with decision makers on issues affecting science, scientists and the natural world. One of the most effective ways this can be achieved is through influencing Parliament.

The IES has put together this guide to inform members of the various routes to influencing the UK Parliament. It outlines the different bodies operating within and around Parliament, working with an MP or Lord to raise issues in Parliament, and the different ways individuals can give evidence to Parliament. It includes an Appendix of relevant parliamentary decision making bodies as of January 2025.

For more information about influencing the UK Parliament, or influencing environmental policy more widely, please contact IES Policy Lead Joseph Lewis (joseph@the-ies.org).

Our open access commitment
We are firm supporters of open access as we believe we have a moral responsibility to make environmental science widely available to affect change. If you appreciate the availability of this information and have found it useful, please consider
