What is Chartered Scientist?

The CSci designation demonstrates a high level of competence and professionalism in science. At present there are over around 9,000 Chartered Scientists working across all sectors of science. By benchmarking professional scientists at the same high level, CSci aims to re-engage public trust and confidence in science and scientists.

Why become a Chartered Scientist?

Being a Chartered Scientist allows all scientists working at the full professional level to be recognised on an equal footing

The designation aims to give an assurance of current competence through mandatory revalidation of CPD, and encapsulates the interdisciplinary nature of science in the 21st Century.

Provides wider recognition outside of your own specific discipline;
Enables you to demonstrate to employers and other professionals your commitment to a high level of competence and continuing professional development; and
Demonstrats the breadth of your career across the field of science.

Who can become a Chartered Scientist?

You can apply to become a Chartered Scientist if you are a Full Member or Fellow of the IES. This usually involves having at least four years’ professional experience in order to have the necessary knowledge and have had sufficient experience to meet the competency requirements, and having achieved a relevant masters-level degree or ability to demonstrate equivalent level of knowledge through experience.

Candidates need to demonstrate their competence in five main areas; application of scientific knowledge and understanding, personal responsibility, interpersonal skills, professional practice, and professionalism.
