Stephen Pyatt

Stephen Pyatt is the Discipline Lead for Air Quality at Arcadis, where he leads a team undertaking a range of air quality and odour assessments. After completing an undergraduate degree and Master’s degree, he worked for a local authority (East Staffordshire Borough Council) as a Pollution Control Officer, and looked after the Local Authority's air quality management duties.

In his current role, Stephen leads a team responsible for delivering air quality and odour services, for clients across all sectors. They complete standalone air quality assessments, assessments for EIA chapters, dispersion modelling, air quality and odour monitoring, environmental permitting and odour assessments.

For over 10 years he has worked closely with National Highways, and as part of his duties he has developed policy and guidance, including co-authoring of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB). He has also been instrumental in the development of tools which are used in the UK on road schemes including for the assessment of Ammonia within assessments in the absence of government approved emission factors. In addition to the development of guidance he has also been heavily involved in research into investigating effectiveness of measures to improve air quality from road traffic emissions, with National Highways. This has included undertaking air quality monitoring behind barriers both in the UK and Europe, analysis of vehicle emissions and a wide range of other projects. His team have also managed National Highways' network of over 60 automatic analysers as part of its National Air Quality Monitoring Network, which has included data ratification and managing installation of new sites.
He has led a number of air quality assessments for high profile schemes, most recently the Lower Thames Crossing scheme, which was a particular challenge in relation to assessing the impacts of the scheme on large numbers of designated habitats. Stephen has a keen interest in the development of approaches to better understand impacts of changes in air pollution on designated habitats and recognises the key issue it can be when progressing large schemes through the various consenting processes.

Stephen is a Chartered Environmentalist and has been a member of the IES and IAQM for more than 15 years. He chose to join these organisations because they are recognised as the leading authorities in the UK environmental professions. The wealth of resources and knowledge-sharing opportunities offered by these organisations play a vital role in keeping professionals in this field updated with the latest developments, in what can be a complex discipline.
