Alan Shepherd

Alan is a Chartered Scientist and Fellow of the IES with an honours degree in Geology from Edinburgh University, a Masters in Land Reclamation and Restoration from Cranfield, and almost 30 years of industry experience across oil and gas exploration, utilities, waste management and environmental consultancy.

Having recently joined Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions as Head of Geoenvironmental, Alan's role is to lead and build on their existing environmental business. In particular, Alan is focussed on expanding GDG’s land quality, remediation and environmental engineering capabilities to benefit existing clients and projects, while also growing the team and broadening their services into new markets in the UK, Ireland and overseas.

Alan has a background in the delivery of large-scale urban regeneration projects including the Glasgow Commonwealth Games Village and the Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area – projects which were often intensely challenging to deliver, but also rewarding to see come to fruition after many years of hard work. His ongoing role at GDG will continue this trend, working with the team to assess and remediate problem sites, mitigate liability, and support clients in the UK and further afield with property developments, divestments and acquisitions.

Alan first joined the IES in 2007, recognising both the specialist focus on land condition and the value in the diversity of environmental disciplines the Institution supported, alongside an appreciation of the strong scientific underpinning to the organisation’s activities.
