Ian Byrne

Treasurer

Ian Byrne is a chartered accountant and chartered environmentalist seeking to bring an analytical approach to the assessment of sustainable energy and rigour to calculating energy and carbon savings, while explaining energy efficiency and climate change in terms that anyone can understand, avoiding technical jargon. Ian is the Principal at IBECCS, a consultancy focusing on energy and carbon management for SMEs, NGOs and the public sector, having previously spent 28 years at the National Energy Foundation as its Deputy and Chief Executive. 

An expert on international standardisation, Ian chairs the BSI Shadow Committee on GHG Mitigation and Adaptation, and at ISO level co-convenes the working group drafting ISO 50009 “Energy Management in Multiple Organizations” having previously led the one that published ISO 50047 "Determination of Energy Savings in Organizations".  

Past achievements including being Treasurer of the Society for the Environment (SocEnv), managing the Secretariat for the Green Energy Supply Certification Scheme, evolving technical standards for the Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme (precursor to the Carbon Trust Standard), setting up the Energy Saving Trust's network of Energy Efficiency Advice Centres, and sitting on the Institute of Chartered Accountants' Sustainability Committee as well as the Boards of several Energy Agencies.

Ian was appointed to the IES Council as its Treasurer in July 2019.
