#IESTurningTheTide — Blue Carbon: The role of coastal ecosystems in climate change mitigation

Coastal mangrove forest

In this event, we heard from Professor Hilary Kennedy who described the Coastal Blue Carbon Ecosystems (CBCE) of mangroves, saltmarshes and seagrass meadows, covering their role in climate mitigation and the other ecosystem services they provide. Hilary shared details of how human activities are damaging and destroying CBCE, resulting in the emission of greenhouses gases (GHG) to the atmosphere and hence the need to conserve, protect and restore them.

This event was organised in collaboration with the UK Blue Carbon Forum as part of our Turning the Tide: systems thinking for a sustainable ocean project, which has been endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Activity.
